In a win for Master Plumbers, a massive step has been taken along the pathway to a plumber and drainlayer self-certification regime with the first reading of the legislation in Parliament.

The regime, which has bipartisan support, will speed up straightforward residential plumbing and drainage work, leaving BCAs to focus on higher-risk projects.

“This approach has been long called for by Master Plumbers and aligns plumbers and drainlayers with electricians and gasfitters, who have been able to certify their own work for years,” said Building and Construction Minister Chris Penk.
A second Bill, which has also passed its first reading will support self-certification by increasing accountability and making sure checks and balances are in place if work goes wrong.

“With these two Bills, we are backing tradies who take pride in their work,” said Minister Penk.
