Master Plumbers has published its 2026 Action Plan, setting out the organisation’s advocacy priorities ahead of this year’s General Election.
The plan encompasses three key areas for the plumbing, gasfitting and drainlaying industry:
- Productivity & Workforce Capacity
- Climate & Environment
- Public Health & Safety.
To ensure a sustainable pipeline of skilled tradespeople, Master Plumbers wants to see Apprenticeship Boost funding cover at least the first two years of all PGD apprenticeships, with funding levels restored to $1,000 per month in year one and $500 in year two.
As Aotearoa New Zealand faces increasing energy security risks, Master Plumbers is calling for an extension to the $200m Gas Security Fund to include biomethane infrastructure, alongside direct investment in commercial-scale biogas plants and grid injection capability.
This country has significant potential to grow its renewable gas sector, yet current production remains limited.
Hot water heat pumps also represent a practical and proven opportunity to reduce emissions and improve energy efficiency in homes. However, high upfront costs remain a barrier to uptake. Master Plumbers would like to see a national support programme, including targeted rebates and low-interest financing options.
The introduction of new lead-free plumbing product requirements this May is a significant advocacy win for Master Plumbers and a major step forward for protecting public health.
However, there is urgent need to strengthen the checks and balances to prevent non-compliant products entering the market. Introducing mandatory third-party verification and a publicly accessible register would ensure products meet required standards.
Risks also remain within the wider water supply network, particularly in older infrastructure pipes and fittings. Master Plumbers supports a coordinated programme of targeted testing, prioritised remediation of high-risk areas, and ongoing monitoring, to ensure water is lead-free from source to tap.
