Changes to plumbing, gasfitting & drainlaying apprenticeship programmes
6 August 2018
One of the common themes The Skills Organisation hear from industry is that not enough teaching is done during block courses and too much time is spent on assessment.
Skills says it has taken this on board and looked at different ways to improve the apprenticeship journey. As a result, they’ve developed programmes that incorporate more learning into block courses by introducing an online, at-home component.
New apprentices entering the following combined courses will now have most of their theory assessments done online, rather than taking up time during block courses:
- Plumbing, Gasfitting and Drainlaying
- Plumbing and Drainlaying
- Gasfitting
This means apprentices will need to have access to a computer and the internet to complete their theory assessments. Assessments can be accessed via the online My Skills portal, where apprentices currently have access to their learning material.
This new model is intended to give apprentices a greater learning experience as there will be more time for teaching and interaction with their block course tutors.
